One of the most important steps in following your dream is to BELIEVE in yourself and to BELIEVE you deserve happiness; especially when happiness comes from following your dream. No one has the right to tell you what you do or don’t deserve. I know this first hand.
When I began following my dream to become an author, my mother’s 1950’s mentality was and still is, I should go to work, go to church and go home. Every time I drove to a writer’s group meeting she would call my cell phone and give me the third degree about why I should be home. ‘Who’s going to cook Tommy, (my husband’s) dinner? Weather forecast is calling for thunderstorms.’ I loath this one, ‘I have no business on the road by myself.’ At this point I’m so pissed I can’t see straight and I’m debating whether to turn around or to go to my meeting, which by the way, is a three hours drive. I usually hang up the phone, after a heated debate that if Tommy can wake me up at 3 am to go deer hunting, he can sure find himself something to eat or he can root with the little piggies or die.
If I would have listened to my mom, I would have been a miserable woman today. Sure, there are days when I don’t feel like writing, and there have been plenty of mornings I wished I would have gotten to bed earlier the night before when I put coffee grounds where the water goes in the coffee maker. The point I’m trying to make is, to follow your dream it takes courage, sacrifice and determination. You are in charge of your happiness and no one has the right to take it away from you.
When you make the first step in following your dream, you first need to write down your dreams, your goals and obtainable steps in which you plan to follow your dream. No need to stress yourself about what the goals and steps should be. Most often it will change as you learn and grow in the process of following your dream.
- Develop a Plan
- Execute on that plan
- Work the plan; modify when needed
- Stay on Course
I don’t have time. I work full time. I have kids…..
I love this quote. I have a plaque hanging beside my bathroom mirror that says: If Your ship don’t come in…Swim out to it!
If there’s anything I have learned over the last thirteen years on my journey to become an author, is life is too short. I may not be famous, which by the way is not one of my goals, however I have planted a seed and my youngest son is following his dream.
For the past three years he has been writing Christian Hip-hop music. The past year he has been recording and producing music with a friend from his church. It’s a wonderful feeling to know I have touched someone and inspired them to follow their dreams and happiness!
Until next time, keep reaching for your star in sky!
